Where can i buy a large screw?

What are some larger screws called and where would they sell them. I can't see any at the hardware stores. Is there something about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick with a screwy thing all along its length and sharp at the end, not a bolt. What is it called and what would such a screw be used for? I am screwed and I have some loose screws. Thanks
